Systems, built and governed
For years my job was encoding other experts’ judgment into products that work when the expert isn’t in the room. This time the expert was me, and the hard parts weren’t the ones I expected. The research had to overrule my own pages; restraint is an easy principle to state and a harder one to apply to work with your name on it. And the judgment didn’t scale when I taught it or templated it. It scaled when I wrote it down at the level of detail a machine needs, which turned out to be the level a busy teammate needs too. That’s the job now: fewer decisions for everyone else, so the decisions left are the ones only a designer can make.
